BEWARE OF PONZI SCHEMES, EFCC WARNS A’IBOM RESIDENTS -Apprehends Fake Army Man, Ors The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC, Uyo Operational Office, has arrested one Mr. Micheal Uno, the promoter of a Company called Michello Multi-Purpose Company used in extorting money from people under false pretense. Mr. Abdul Chukkol, Head of operations, Akwa Ibom State Office, made this known in Uyo during a breakfast parley with journalists over the weekend. Mr. Chukkol explained that Michello Multi Purpose Company, also known as Michello Wonder Bank hide under the cloak of an investment outfit where investors were being deceived of earning 80 percent profit on any amount invested within a time frame of 40 days. According to the Anti Graft Boss, the suspect who is now cooling his feet at the EFCC cell was paying those who invested until a point were he got stuck and people were no longer paid “then we started receiving petitions. We contacted him at his office in Calabar and found out that where he used to operate from was locked”. He revealed that the commission contacted some of his agents who are close to him and also part of the business, but they all escaped into hiding, saying that through the complaints filled by victims, the commission discover that there were people who had invested up to N30 Billion, while some communities contributed and invested to earn huge profit. The Commission Boss disclosed that Mr. Micheal Uno was arrested and during interrogation, it was found that he was into a kind of ponzi scheme without investment, maintaining that the scheme crashed in August, 2018 with no fewer than 15,000 alleged investors while the funds paid could not be retrieved. In another development, the Commission has also arrested a fake Army officer who has defrauded some unsuspecting citizens of the state. Mr. Chukkol said the Commission received a complaint from a defruaded victim of the fake Army Officer, adding that the alleged fraudsters was consequently arrested with three pairs of Army uniform, army identity card and other military regalia. He gave the name of the alleged fraudsters as Henry Asuquo Mfon, from Ibesikpo Asutan LGA, Maintaining that investigations so far revealed that he had defruaded his victim to the tune of N700,000. According to the anti graft Boss, “the surprising thing is that there are some Army officers who actually thought he was an officer” adding that investigation was ongoing and when completed he would be charged to court. Continuing, he noted that the EFCC had in 2018 secured 312 convictions including politicians, business men, among others adding that fraudulent activities were rapidly gaining grounds in Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria at large and warned people to refrain from unlawful activities. He however cautioned members of the public to avoid involvement in PONZI schemes and some unverified Multi-Purpose Cooperative Societies springing up in the state and urged members of the public to support the fight against corruption and other related offenses by giving timely and necessary information for a better fight against crime.
