The Chairman of Oruk Anam Local Government Area, Prince Ubong Idiong has revealed the reasons behind the building of the first ever Local Government owned Sports Academy in Akwa Ibom State.

The council boss made the revelation when he was hosted on AKWA IBOM RISING; a weekly Radio Magazine Show which focuses on developmental strides of Governor Udom Emmanuel’s administration on Inspiration FM on Monday, July 8, 2019.

The Monday edition which is anchored by broadcaster and public affairs analyst, Emmanuel Godwin popularly known as Emma Solution had Prince Idiong dissecting questions concerning his adminstration as the Chairman of the largest Local Government Area in Akwa Ibom state, presenting his scorecard alongside truths and facts on topical issues.

Atuekong Ubong Idiong said the inspiration to build the sports academy was borne out of the need to sustain the investment of the Governor in youth development through sports. According to him, ‘in 2017-2018 when Oruk Anam won the maiden and second edition of the Akwa Ibom State Sports Festival and received the 10 million naira cash gift, we thought it wise to invest it by building an academy which will groom more sports talents for export’.

On government projects sited in his domain, the Chairman used the opportunity to give kudos to Her Excellency, the wife of the Governor, Mrs Martha Emmanuel for the garri processing Mill which produces fine, high quality garri in minutes. He thanked her for facilitating a palm oil processing factory in Oruk Anam. He also noted that there are lots of fish farms as well as an industrial starch manufacturing industry.

Speaking further, he said ‘in the past, we never had attention from the state government. During the last dispensation, we did not have any road done during the period until Udom Emmanuel came and the story changed.

The people of Oruk Anam are happy with the governor for the succor given them in the health sector, Ikot Okoro General Hospital, which was set up since 1954 and abandoned after the civil war, even though it serviced more than 4 LGAs was renovated 2 to 3 months after Mr Udom Emmanuel visited, it was like magic’.

On his achievement in office, Mr. Idiong said he holds in high esteem his achievements in the educational sector in Oruk Anam, being the construction of a state-of-the-art library with computer facilities. He said the library has been beneficial to the community, especially students from the Southern Annang School.

Listeners from Oruk Anam and environ called in on the show to extol the virtues of the chairman for his ingenuity in office and his style of leadership.
